Vassilis Kargas is a postdoctoral researcher in Professor Alan Warren’s group at the University of Cambridge, where he investigates the molecular mechanisms of ribosome biogenesis. By integrating structural biology, specifically cryo electron microscopy (cryo EM), with computational biophysics, he captures the detailed structure and dynamics of ribosomal assembly intermediates. This multifaceted approach allows Vassilis to map how these essential processes are coordinated in human cells and, crucially, how mutations can corrupt this pathway to give rise to ribosomopathies such as Shwachman Diamond syndrome.
